The Evolution of SMILE Eye Surgery: Introducing ZEISS SMILE Pro® 2.0 at Bangkok Eye Hospital

Deciding to undergo vision correction is a transformative moment. For many, it’s a journey fueled by the desire for freedom—freedom from foggy glasses, the daily hassle of contact lenses, and the limitations of blurry vision. However, that excitement is often met with valid concerns: Is it safe? Will it hurt? How long is the recovery? In 2026, those questions have a definitive answer. While "Blade-Free LASIK" has long been the gold standard, SMILE pro® 2.0 has emerged as a trusted solution for those ready to see the world through a clearer lens. Laser eye surgery has evolved significantly over the past decade. The ZEISS SMILE Pro 2.0 upgrade is the latest digital evolution of flapless SMILE eye surgery. Performed using the high-frequency 2 MHz ZEISS VisuMax 800 platform, this advanced system slashes active surgical laser exposure down to just 8 seconds per eye while introducing intelligent, automated AI navigation to correct short-sightedness and astigmatism with absolute micron precision. If you are considering vision correction with the SMILE procedure, especially with SMILE Pro® 2.0, this article explains how SMILE Pro® works, who is suitable, recovery expectations, and how it compares across flapless vision correction procedure generations. What is SMILE Pro®? Starting with SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)—representing the next generation of laser vision correction—SMILE Pro® builds on the success of its predecessors. The 2.0 version utilizes the ZEISS VisuMax 800, a system designed not just for speed, but for absolute digital precision and intelligent tracking workflows via integrated CentraLign® and OcuLign® systems. Unlike traditional LASIK, there is no corneal flap created. Instead, a high-precision laser creates a tiny, lens-shaped tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea, which is safely removed through a microscopic 2 to 4 millimeter incision. Benefits of SMILE Pro® 2.0 Laser Eye Surgery Minimal Disruption: Because the entry incision is so small, your corneal structural architecture remains exceptionally strong and stable. Rapid Recovery Time: Most patients experience clear vision fast and can return to normal daily activities quickly, usually within 24 to 48 hours because the procedure is engineered to be minimally invasive. Comfort First: The procedure is virtually painless. With the VisuMax 800 hardware, the active laser treatment takes less than 10 seconds per eye, minimizing patient anxiety and fixation discomfort. How Does SMILE Pro® 2.0 Improve Precision? One of the biggest anxieties in eye surgery is the potential for manual alignment error. SMILE Pro® 2.0 solves this through an automated, fully digitalized cloud workflow: Seamless Data Transfer: Your personal corneal measurement parameters are streamed directly from diagnostic scanning tools to the laser machine, completely eliminating manual typing variables. CentraLign® Smart Alignment: This intelligent system automatically centers and aligns the laser with your unique visual center axis, ensuring the treatment is targeted precisely on how you naturally look at the world. OcuLign® Cyclotorsion Compensation: The software automatically detects if your eyeball rotates slightly when transitioning from a sitting position to lying flat down on the treatment bed, shifting coordinates automatically to correct astigmatism with 100% accuracy. What Is Thin Cornea? Causes, Symptoms, and Eye Care Tips

Thin Cornea: Causes, Symptoms, and TreatmentsBangkok Eye Hospital A thin cornea refers to a condition where the corneal thickness is lower than normal, which can affect vision and overall eye health. Causes include natural aging, frequent eye rubbing, genetic disorders, or side effects from previous eye surgeries. Common symptoms include blurry vision, frequent prescription changes, distorted images, and high astigmatism. The cornea plays a vital role in focusing light into the eye. When the cornea thins, it may lead to complications, especially for those considering vision correction surgeries like LASIK. Understanding the causes and symptoms is essential for maintaining long-term vision clarity and preventing further thinning. Understanding the Cornea The cornea is the transparent, curved layer covering the front part of the eye. It helps focus light into the eye for clear vision and serves as a protective barrier against dust and germs. Normally, corneal thickness ranges between 520–550 microns, but it may thin with age. What Is a Thin Cornea? A thin cornea is typically defined as a corneal thickness of less than 500 microns (0.5 mm). It is not necessarily a disease and often requires no treatment. However, thin corneas can affect certain diagnoses—such as glaucoma—since intraocular pressure readings may appear lower than actual values. Corneal thickness also plays an important role in refractive surgery decisions. Patients with thin corneas may not be ideal candidates for LASIK. In such cases, surgeons may recommend alternative procedures such as PRK, ICL, FemtoLASIK, ReLEx SMILE Pro, or NanoLASIK, which preserve more corneal tissue. Does Wearing Contact Lenses Cause Thinning? Generally, wearing contact lenses correctly does not thin the cornea. However, prolonged use without proper cleaning or rest may lead to oxygen deprivation or corneal infections, which can gradually weaken or thin corneal tissue. Causes of Thin Cornea 1. Genetic Conditions Keratoconus is the most common cause, where the cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone shape, leading to irregular astigmatism and blurred vision. 2. Eye Surgery or Injury Procedures like LASIK or PRK can thin the cornea, especially if excessive tissue is removed. Repeated eye injuries or untreated infections can also cause thinning due to tissue damage. 3. Systemic Diseases and Medication Autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or SLE can cause chronic inflammation, leading to thinning. Long-term use of steroid eye drops may also weaken corneal tissue over time. Symptoms of Thin Cornea Corneal thinning often progresses slowly. Key symptoms include: Blurry or distorted vision Frequent changes in prescription High or irregular astigmatism Difficulty focusing or double vision Diagnosis Eye doctors use advanced devices like a Keratometer to measure curvature or Corneal Topography to create a detailed map of the corneal shape. Detailed assessment is essential before undergoing any refractive surgery. Summary Thin cornea is a silent condition that can impact vision. Early detection is crucial. At Bangkok Eye Hospital, our specialists ensure accurate evaluation and personalized treatment planning for your eye health. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can corneal thickness be increased? A: No, corneal thickness cannot naturally increase as it is determined by the cornea’s internal structure. Care focuses on preventing further thinning. Q: What happens if thin cornea is left untreated? A: It may lead to worsening vision, irregular astigmatism, or corneal ectasia. In severe cases, acute hydrops or corneal perforation may occur, leading to permanent vision loss. Q: Can thin cornea be prevented? A: Yes — by avoiding vigorous eye rubbing, maintaining good hygiene, limiting contact lens wear time, and having regular eye checkups.

Understanding Pterygium: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

How people notice and see Pterygium without knowing it is Pterygium Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed a small, fleshy growth on the white part of your eye, usually near the nose? It might appear slightly red, or you might feel like something’s stuck in your eye. This growth can slowly creep onto the clear, center part of your eye, known as the cornea, causing discomfort, dryness, or even blurred vision. Many people mistake these signs for simple irritation, dryness, or tired eyes, unaware that they might be dealing with a condition called pterygium. 1. What is Pterygium? Pterygium (pronounced tuh-RIJ-ee-um) is a common eye condition that looks like a triangular or wedge-shaped growth on the eye’s surface. It usually starts small but can slowly expand toward the cornea. Though it might look concerning, it’s not cancerous. For some, it’s just a minor cosmetic issue, but for others, it can cause vision problems or significant discomfort. Pinguecula and pterygium are often mistaken for each other. Pinguecula is a yellowish bump on the conjunctiva, while pterygium extends onto the cornea and can affect vision. Proper diagnosis is key. 2. Why does it happen? Pterygium happens mainly due to long-term exposure to UV light from the sun, which is why it’s often called "surfer’s eye." But you don’t have to be a surfer to get it - anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors, especially without proper eye protection, is at risk. Dust, wind, and dry environments can also irritate the eye and contribute to its development. Genetics can play a part, too, as pterygium is more common in certain families. 3. What to do when you notice it? If you spot a growth on your eye or feel persistent discomfort, dryness, or redness, don’t ignore it. Make an appointment with an eye specialist, especially if it’s growing or starting to affect your vision. The doctor can diagnose pterygium with a simple eye exam and discuss whether it needs to be treated right away or monitored over time. 4. Treatment Options ✅Observation and Protection: In mild cases, protecting your eyes from the sun with sunglasses and using lubricating eye drops can help keep symptoms in check. ✅Medication: If the pterygium becomes red and inflamed, doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops to reduce irritation.  ✅Surgery: When pterygium grows too large, affects vision, or causes significant discomfort, surgery to remove the growth may be recommended. This involves removing the tissue and often placing a graft (a small piece of your own conjunctiva) to cover the area and reduce the chance of it coming back. 5. Advice from Bangkok Eye Hospital and Next Steps At Bangkok Eye Hospital, our experienced ophthalmologists often see patients who are unsure what’s causing their eye discomfort or unusual growths. It’s essential to address these concerns early to avoid complications. If surgery is necessary, one of the best innovations available today is using fibrin glue during pterygium surgery, which offers many benefits over traditional stitches. To learn more about how fibrin glue can improve your recovery and comfort, check out our next article on this advanced treatment here. If you’re experiencing symptoms or want a consultation, don’t hesitate to reach out to Bangkok Eye Hospital - our team is here to guide you through every step of your eye care journey.

KEY TAKEAWAYS Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) causes a gradual loss of central vision. It is commonly found in people aged 50 and older and is divided into two main types: Dry AMD (most common) and Wet AMD (more severe). Key warning signs include blurry central vision, distorted images, altered colors, or seeing straight lines as wavy or bent. Current treatment technologies include injections (Anti-VEGF), laser therapy to destroy abnormal blood vessels, surgery, and emerging technologies like Gene therapy and Stem cell therapy. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease caused by the deterioration of cells in the central area of the retina (Macula), which is the most critical part for vision. This leads to a gradual loss of central vision. It may start with blurry central vision, distorted images, or altered colors, eventually leading to a complete loss of central vision. Generally, AMD is commonly found in people aged 50 and older, and the risk increases with age. Other risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, and genetics. 📌 Table of Contents ▶ Two Types of AMD ▶ What Are the Symptoms of AMD? ▶ How to Reduce the Risk of AMD ▶ How Do Ophthalmologists Diagnose AMD? ▶ AMD Treatment Options ▶ Pros and Cons of Each Treatment ▶ New Technologies in AMD Treatment ▶ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Two Types of AMD Dry AMD: The most common type (about 80-90%). It is caused by the accumulation of waste products in the retina, leading to the gradual deterioration of light-sensitive cells and a slow decline in vision. Wet AMD: Less common (about 10-20%) but more severe. It occurs when abnormal new blood vessels grow under the retina. These vessels may leak fluid or blood, causing swelling and scarring in the retina, resulting in rapid vision loss. AMD is the third leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. Although there is currently no complete cure, there are treatment options and new technologies that can slow the progression and maintain the patient's quality of life. What Are the Symptoms of AMD? The symptoms of AMD depend on the stage of the disease. Dry AMD is divided into three stages: early, intermediate, and late. Symptoms typically worsen over time. Early dry AMD usually has no symptoms. In intermediate dry AMD, some people may still have no symptoms, while others may notice mild symptoms such as slight blurring in the center of their vision or difficulty seeing in low light. In late AMD (both wet and dry), many people notice that straight lines start to look wavy or bent. You may notice a blurry area near the center of your vision. Over time, this blurry area may expand, colors may not look as bright as before, and you may have more difficulty seeing in low light. Seeing wavy lines is a key warning sign of late AMD. If you notice this symptom, see an ophthalmologist immediately. How to Reduce the Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration? Several studies indicate that adopting the following habits may delay the onset of AMD (or slow down vision loss from AMD): Quit smoking or never start smoking Exercise regularly Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels Eat a healthy diet, including leafy greens and fish How Do Ophthalmologists Diagnose AMD? Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye exam, including pupil dilation, retinal examination, and retinal scanning using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). AMD Treatment Options 1. Medications and Supplements Vitamins and minerals: Taking vitamins C, E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper may help slow the progression of dry AMD in some patients. Injections: Anti-VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) drugs are the primary treatment for wet AMD. These drugs help inhibit the growth of abnormal new blood vessels. 2. Laser Therapy Photodynamic therapy (PDT): Uses a laser combined with an injected drug to destroy abnormal new blood vessels. Laser photocoagulation: Uses a laser to directly destroy abnormal new blood vessels. 3. Surgery Blood removal surgery: In cases of severe bleeding in the eye, surgery may be required to remove the blood. Retinal transplant surgery: A new technology that is still in the experimental stage. Pros and Cons of Each Treatment Treatment Method Pros Cons Vitamins and Minerals Inexpensive and safe Not effective for everyone; may have minor side effects Injections Highly effective in treating wet AMD Requires regular injections into the eye; potential side effects Laser Therapy Effective at destroying new blood vessels May damage surrounding normal tissue; not effective for everyone Surgery May help treat certain complications Surgical risks involved; not effective for everyone Consult an Ophthalmologist for an AMD Treatment Plan There are several treatments for AMD, each with its own pros and cons. Dry eyes

Dry eyes Tears play a crucial role in keeping our eyes moist, ensuring clear vision by letting light effectively pass through the eye's lens, and supplying oxygen to nourish the eye. They also help fend off infections and keep foreign substances at bay.   Now, when it comes to dry eyes, it's a pretty common issue that can stem from abnormal tear production or tears evaporating too quickly. This can lead to discomfort, irritation, that feeling like there's something foreign in your eye, redness, pain, blurry vision that gets better with blinking, or even feeling like your eyes are tired and heavy. What causes dry eyes can vary—getting older, being a woman (yeah, we're more prone to it), certain allergy medications, spending loads of time on screens, being in places with dust and smoke, gusty winds, and bright lights, they can all have a hand in it.   But hey, the good news is there are ways to tackle dry eyes:   Keep away from things that can make it worse, like strong winds and dust, by popping on some sunglasses and protecting those peepers. Remember to take breaks or blink more often, especially when you're glued to screens for a while. You've got these cool eye drops called artificial tears. There's a type for daytime (more watery) and nighttime (a bit thicker). Which one to use depends on how serious your dry eye situation is. Sometimes your doc might suggest special eye drops that encourage your eyes to make more tears. Give your eyes a treat with warm, clean cloths over your closed eyelids to help them feel better. If the dry eye struggle is real and isn't improving, it's wise to chat with an eye doctor.   All in all, dry eyes can be a bother, but there are solutions out there. It's important to take good care of your eyes, especially when it's all dry outside. If you suspect you've got dry eyes, having a chat with an eye care expert is a smart move.
